We are thrilled and honored to announce the opening of the French Academy of Jersey City, which is partnering with the French Academy of Bilingual Culture.
The enrollment applications will be available in the next few days. We plan to begin our first afterschool season mid September 2012 and the full time school in September 2013.
The French Academy website (www.thefrenchabc.com ) will be updated shortly with details about this project as well as the physical address of the school.
Therefore the school website will replace the blog which will be terminated.
Stay tuned for more information,

- “Would it be possible to go beyond 1st Grade for the first year?”
If there’s enough interest, why not? We have already received several requests for 2nd Grade and up to 4th Grade, so we are considering these options.
There’s however a minimum number of children needed to open a class. It all depends on YOU, parents! We understand many of you are in a “wait and see” mode, but when it’s time to give a real commitment ahead of time, without your support we won’t be able to make it happen :-)
- “What is the age requirement to start the afterschool program in September 2012?”
We like the philosophy and approach of The French Academy of Bilingual Culture a lot, and are hoping to create something very similar here. You can already take a look at their afterschool program to have an idea of what we could offer here in Jersey City. We are also working on group classes, semi-private and private sessions for adults and corporates. Again, if there is enough interest for a specific age group, we will definitely work on it with you.
- “Will there be a lunch program at school?”
It’s still early but yes, we’re hoping to offer a lunch program when the school opens in September 2013. And believe us, as French moms ourselves we’ll do everything in our power to make it as “French” as possible!
- “Will there be an after-care program at school (for example, from 3pm to 6pm)?”
Yes, at an extra cost, as is the case in all schools (public and private).
There will also be enrichment activities (sports, arts, music…) you’ll be able to sign up you child(ren) for (again, as is the case in all schools, at an extra cost).
We encourage you to take a look at The French Academy of Bilingual Culture’s enrichment programs for a better idea of what we have in mind for our school here in Jersey City.
- “Will there be a bus option to pickup children at their schools so that they can attend the afterschool class?”
It seems unlikely at this time, but again, if there’s enough interest and commitment we can work on that with you. Many families have also expressed their interest in occasional carpooling. We’ll also be offering various options for classes, at different times of the day, on weekdays as well as on weekends, and we have no doubt each family will be able to find a class that fits its own busy schedule :-)
- ”Does this collaboration mean that the JC school will be a sister school by the same owners?”
We are working closely with Anne-Sophie and Jean-François Gueguen from The French Academy of Bilingual Culture, based in New Milford, NJ. They have already created an additional campus in Morris Plains, NJ. We like their philosophy a lot and a school like theirs would be a fantastic asset for our local community here in Jersey City.
- “We do a little French at home via CDs with nursery rhymes with my 9 month-old son but neither I nor my husband speak French. I would love to still have my son be part of the program, I hope that it is OK!”
Absolutely! The afterschool program (Fall 2012) will of course take into account the children’s exposure to French language & culture at home. The school curriculum (September 2013) will be designed to enable children from different linguistic background & cultures to reach the same milestones by the end of the year.
- “My child will be 5 in september 2013, does it mean he will only be able to stay 2 years in the French-American school?”
No — we are hoping to open a full-time French-American preschool (Nursery through 1st Grade) in September 2013, then open a new grade each year to follow the children’s progression.
- “For 2013 do we have to commit now?”
For the opening of the full-time school in September 2013, we will need a financial commitment as early as January/February 2013. For the opening of the afterschool program, we will need a financial commitment in July/August 2012 — of course we will keep you updated on these important financial deadlines & budget issues.
- “Can you tell us which properties you’ve already looked at in JC?”
We’re right into it! It’s a little early to mention an exact location as we don’t want to set high expectations or disappoint anyone in case it falls through, but we can tell you we have already visited an interesting location in Downtown Jersey City, and have plans to visit two other places by the end of this week in the Journal Square / Jersey City Heights area. Of course we’ll keep you updated as soon as things are finalized!
A fantastic video about bilingual education – “The Paths We Choose”, courtesy of The French Academy of Bilingual Culture
The French Academy of Bilingual Culture (New Milford, NJ) has graciously allowed us to share with you one of their most recent media production.
We love it!
“This video examines the value of a bilingual education, exploring why younger children have a superior ability to learn a second language. Considering research from Eric Lenneberg, Ellen Bialystok, among others, it also looks at why bilingual students are better speakers, better thinkers, better learners, have superior focus, score higher on tests, and are better citizens of the world.”
As you know we’ve been looking for a building for the afterschool sessions (Sept. 2012) then the school (Sept. 2013), for several weeks now, and we may have found a location that we really like, and think you would really like too.
We’ve just heard today that the committee in charge of that building is having its last meeting at the end of next week (the following one won’t be until September… way too late), and we need figures to be able to make a reasonable offer.
Please help us by taking the survey as soon as possible if you haven’t done so already, and ask your friends to do the same! It’s essential that we collect as many replies as possible (one per family of course).
Thanks a lot, and don’t forget: SPREAD THE WORD!
